British man who tried to shoot Donald Trump returns to UK only five months after receiving one-year sentence

Michael Sanford, the British man who was imprisoned in the US for trying to shoot Donald Trump, has returned to the UK, according to the Independent.

In December 2016, Michael Sanford, 20, was sentenced by a US court to a one-year in jail. However, he seems to have been allowed to return to his homeland after less than five months.

The man was due for a flight back to London on Delta Airlines. The plane landed at Heathrow around 11am on Thursday. Stanford was to be welcomed by his parents at the airport. Whether he will serve the rest of his sentence in the UK is still not known.

In June 2016, Sanford, who suffers from autism, attended a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas and tried to take a gun from a police officer. He was arrested and told the investigators he wanted to shoot the then candidate for presidency Donald Trump.

A court heard, during a hearing that took place last September, that Sanford entered the US illegally and drove from California to Las Vegas in order to kill Trump. Upon arriving, he tried to grab a police officer’s pistol, but got arrested.

It is believed the the 20-year-old took shooting lessons a day before attending the rally. Michael Sanford’s lawyers said, in his defense, that he was in the middle of a psychotic episode when the incident happened.

During the trial, judge James Mahan told Sanford: “You should not be ashamed or embarrassed about it. You need medication.”

“You’re not a hardened criminal. You’re not evil or a sociopath like a lot of people we have.”

His mother, Lynee, made an emotional appeal on his behalf while he was in custody: “He means everything to me. He made a very bad mistake, a huge error of judgement. It breaks my heart to see him in this environment.”

She added that Michael Sanford was a “good person at heart” who was “very remorseful for what he did” and needed “psychiatric help”.
