This luxury tree house lets owners hide in a Cape Town forest

Some tree houses take a step further from those rustic backyard projects – the House Paarman in Cape Town is a great example for this. It was designed by South African studio Malan Vorster and stands as a modern interpretation of the forest.

The compact cabin is elevated off the ground and lets guests immerse into the tree canopy. The house comprises of four cylindrical units that symbolize trees, each with a tree trunk-like steel pillar with branch-like beams and circular rings that support the floors above, according to Inhabitat. Red cedar wraps the building. The cedar was left untreated in order to develop a patina over time.

“Inspiration was drawn from the timber cabins of Horace Gifford and Kengo Kuma’s notions of working with the void or in-between space, while Louis Kahn’s mastery of pure form and the detailing ethic of Carlo Scarpa informed a process of geometric restraint and handcrafted manufacturing,” the architects wrote.

Inside, furnishings, like the bed and cabinetry, were custom-made from solid oak. A living space can be found on the first floor, a bedroom on the second and a roof deck on the third. The floors are connected by a sculptural staircase. The subdued color palette is yet another statement for the tree house’s connection with nature.
