Police recover body from the River Thames, could be missing French tourist
Specialist officers from the Marine Police Unit recovered a body from the River Thames and suspect it might be a 45-year-old French national Xavier Thomas who had been missing since the night of the terrorist attack on London Bridge. The death toll from the London Bridge terror attack has now risen to eight.
According to the Metropolitan Police, specialist officers from the Marine Police Unit on Tuesday recovered the body of a man the river, near Limehouse. Formal identification has not yet taken place, however, Mr. Thomas’ next of kin have been informed of this development.
Xavier Thomas was in London for the weekend with his girlfriend and they were walking south over London Bridge at around the time the attack started. According to the Metropolitan Police, witness accounts suggest that it is possible that Xavier was struck by the van that resulted in him being thrown into the River Thames. Xavier’s girlfriend was hit by the van and is one of the people seriously injured on the bridge.
Specially trained family liaison officers in the UK and the French authorities are supporting both their families and specialist officers from the Marine Police Unit and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) have been searching the river since the night of the attack.
Eight people were killed and 48 were injured, including four unarmed police officers, after three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge. Wielding knives, the men then left the van and went to the nearby Borough Market area, where they stabbed people in and around restaurants and pubs.
