Trainers made from recycled ocean plastic to be launched by Adidas
Adidas is set to release three new editions of their popular UltraBoost Shoe next month, made using plastic debris collected from the ocean, in an attempt to fight pollution.
The shoe-wear will be available in-store and online starting May 10, according to the Independent. It is estimated that 11 plastic bottles will be reused per pair, while other recycled materials will be used to make the laces, heel lining and sock liner covers.
Adidas has joined forces with environmental initiative Parley for the Oceans. They are helping to turn waste into thread that is then used in building the running shoes. “At Adidas, our core belief is that through sport, we have the power to change lives,” said Kasper Rorsted, Adidas CEO.

Plastics are estimated to make up around 80% of the total marine debris in the world’s oceans. For the sportswear company, turning pollution into high-performance products is a part of their bigger plan to raise awareness of the problem. Last year, they traded the plastic bags from their stores to paper ones, eliminating around 70 million plastic shopping bags.
