Where does your ice cream come form, if you live in the EU

Italy is the European Union’s largest ice cream producer, according to Eurostat. The country was responsible for 19% of all the EU’s ice cream production, in 2016.

Who can deny the appeal of the famous gelato? Well, apparently none in Europe since Italy has remained the continent’s largest ice cream producer. According to Eurostat data, Italy had produced  595 million liters last year or 19% of the EU28 total production. Italy is  followed by Germany, with 515 million or 16% and France, with 454 million or 14%.

Spain came in fourth, followed by Poland, United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands, all with productions that surpassed 100 million liters.

The top ten producers list also features Norway, Romania and the Czech Republic.

Last on the list is Luxembourg, a country with no production units and Austria, where producers almost made 2 million liters.

But while Italy is the EU’s first producer, Italians are by no means the largest consumers of the delightful icy dessert. A Business Insider analysis revealed that Finland, Sweden and Denmark are the countries with the highest consumption of ice cream. Italy came in fifth at per capita consumption, preceded by Ireland and followed by the United Kingdom.
