North Korea, a global threat
Once seen as a nation dangerous to it’s nearby territories, and the United States, North Korea is now being seen as a global threat. After the latest nuclear test conducted by the Hermit Kingdom, the UN called upon an emergency meeting. With several concerned, and war being imminent, one thing was becoming more clear, North Korea is now a global threat.
With it’s isolation from the world growing larger and larger, so is it’s threat. North Korea continues to show the world its power in one way and one way only, nuclear weapons. A country so convinced that war is the answer and showing off the nuclear arsenal will show the world what it is capable of, made the world’s leaders to search for answers on how to resolve the ongoing issue with this country.
On Sunday, North Korea shocked the world yet again, conducting another nuclear test. This has become the country’s sixth nuclear test, having leaders rush to the UN for an emergency meeting. With tensions rising more than ever before, Seoul took action in launching a series of live drills, all in response to the North Koreans’ recent nuclear test. It also deployed the US made missile defense system, THAAD.
In the meeting, one thing was becoming alarming and increasingly aware, North Korea is now a global threat. With it’s array of nuclear weapons growing, the world has it’s eyes on the Hermit Kingdom, wondering what the next move will be. “I think the North Korean threat is a global one now. In the past people believed it was a regional one, that’s no longer the case. It is a global threat now and it combines nuclear weapons and missiles,” said Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA), according to CNN.
Although the IAEA has not confirmed that the nuclear test was a hydrogen bomb, many believe it was, having caused a series of tremors of a magnitude of 6.3 throughout North Korea. It also went to state that the North Koreans are making “significant progress” when it comes to their weapons. Six nuclear tests is an alarming number, due to the fact that North Korean’s leader Kim Jung Un’s father, Kim Jong Il, nor grandfather, Kim Il Sung, did not test that many nuclear arsenal, leading some to believe that Kim Jung Un is keen on putting the country on the center stage of the world. The country is at an all time high of reaching a completely different level on the world’s spectrum.
Being a country difficult to analyze where its next move will be, the world will be watching. Once a country only feared with nuclear weapons, is now a country feared with not only nuclear weapons, but missiles as well. The combination is worrisome and have leaders all over the world hoping for an agreement in the future in order to avoid what could be a catastrophic war.
