The life of Kim Jong Un

A brief insight into the life of the notorious leader of the DPRK.

Kim Jong un succeeded his late father in December 2011 but also succeeded were the constants that illustrated to the world a caricaturing portraiture of the DPRK. The theatrics and oddities of the lavish lifestyle of a dictator acted as a forefront introduction into the secluded yet prolific country. The country’s recent development in nuclear weapons has, however, cast it once again into the spotlight of the international stage. This beckons a crucial question. Who is Kim Jong Un?

He was born the youngest son of Kim Jong Il and his father’s third wife Ko Yung-Hui, an opera singer, in 1983 or 1984, according to South Korean intelligence. His rise to power coincided with his father’s declining interest in his half-brother Kim Jong Nam and older brother Kim Jong Choi, who was dismissed as a desired heir due to an absence of masculinity. Unlike the average DRPK citizen, he was allotted the privilege to study overseas in Switzerland, under a false identity as the son of a North Korean diplomat. His educational peers noted his humor and love for basketball, which would later procure a highly publicized relationship with former NBA star Dennis Rodman. Upon his arrival from Switzerland, he attended Kim Il-sung Military University. In August 2010, he was later believed to have attended a trip with his father to China which solidified his disposition as the chosen heir. After assuming leadership he purged and executed senior officials including his uncle, one of his own top advisers. The prospects for a unified Korea are uncertain yet this volatile country’s state transgresses beyond its own borders.
