Kabul blast in diplomatic quarter
This morning, during rush hour, Kabul experienced another suicide bomb, near the diplomatic quarter. At least 90 people have been killed and over 300 have been injured. The blast occurred next to the German embassy and saw the embassy building irreparably damaged according to Afghan officials. Amongst the dead was a driver from the BBC.
The improvised bomb was detonated inside a huge sewage truck that decimated the area, leaving many in a serious condition. The bombing took place only a few days into the holy Ramadan period.
Witnesses have described the bomb blast as ‘feeling like an earthquake’, as many were thrown due to the shock of the blast. Others described the carnage afterwards and the immediate plumes of smoke that were visible after the blast.
This is one of the biggest improvised bomb attacks seen in the area, if not the biggest. Many described hearing the blast from all over Kabul.
As yet no faction has claimed responsibility for the blast. However, there are clear indications that the Taliban or Isis may be linked to this attack. Death toll figures are expected to rise.
