The election of Macron, much to the dismay of the Russian political class, has resulted in the first meeting between Macron and Putin. Macron made his stance clear and expressed concerns about the situation in Syria. As Macron had not been Putin’s favourite to win the French presidency this exchange was tense, to say the least.
Putin had favoured Le Pen to win the French election so much so that he’d given her a private audience at the Kremlin prior to the election. In addition, accusations have been hurled at Russians implying that they engaged in an information war through media sources such as Sputnik News and Russia Today.
The crux of the exchange revolved around a collaborative effort to remove ISIS and ensure that chemical weapons were not used by the Assad regime. On both counts, Macron insisted that his stance was unshakable. Moreover, discussions revolved around the apparent ‘gay purge’ that has been occurring in Chechnya.

Both leaders appeared agreeable after their engagement and the position of the EU has now been set in stone. Macron has certainly thrown down the gauntlet to allow for the EU to begin its strive towards global recognition.
