Duchess of Cambridge visits Luxembourg as “Brexit Ambassador”

The Duchess of Cambridge joined the national celebrations in Luxembourg to strengthen relations between the UK and the European nation ahead of Brexit, according to a Telegraph report

The royal visited Luxembourg, seat of the European Court of Justice and other EU institutions, to attend celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of a treaty that confirmed the country’s independence and neutrality.

The visit is one of a series made by members of the Royal Family in their role as “Brexit Ambassadors”. However, Yvonne White, Britain’s deputy ambassador to Luxembourg, stressed the visit was not linked to the event.

She said: “There has been a lot of interest in this visit by the Duchess locally, not just from the media but from local people too, and it will certainly help bilateral relations between our countries.”

The diplomat added: “We have a good strong bilateral relationship and always have with the Luxembourgers, they still very much recognise the role we had in liberating them during the war and we have a very strong relationship between the two financial centres particularly, and that’s something we are very anxious to continue and maintain.

The Duchess was joined by Princess Stephanie from the Luxembourg royal family and the country’s prime minister Xavier Bettel.

Kate Middleton visited Paris in March with Prince William in what was seen as the first in a series of European tours by the monarchy to strengthen ties with the European Union state members.

In July, the Cambridges will visit Poland and one of the leading EU nations, Germany.
