Former Obama officials: Obama warned Trump against hiring Michael Flynn after election
Former national security adviser Michael Flynn became the center of major controversy in the early Trump administration when he was fired for “misleading top officials”, failing to disclose earlier conversations he had with the Russian Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak. Shortly after, Michael Flynn registered as a foreign agent.
In a new report from the Associated Press, former President Obama warned Trump against hiring Flynn. The warning came during a meeting at the White House following Trump’s victory. Flynn had been fired by the Obama administration as head of the military’s intelligence branch.
Trump has defended Flynn and blamed the Obama administration for giving him security clearance, as stated in a tweet to followers on Monday. This may be true, but the president further exacerbated the issue himself by appointing Flynn to be a national security adviser.
Sally Yates, former deputy attorney general, is expected to testify that she had warned the White House about contacts between Flynn and Russian agents before being fired by Trump herself. Trump, once again via tweet, said Yates should be asked under oath “if she knows how classified information got into the newspapers”.
These tweets once again show Trump and fellow Republicans priority interest in finding the person responsible for the leak rather than clearing the administration or its officials of interference from Russian agents: a tactic used to undermine the larger, more dangerous issue at hand.
