Fourth American Citizen Detained in North Korea

With North Korea on the brink of war, another US citizen has been detained, adding on to the wave of continuous problems with the nation.

As the world watches day by day the actions of North Korea, no one is sure as to what their next move will be. With several believing we are on the brink of nuclear war, other’s believe this can be solved. With journalists and Americans still being allocated to the country for a specific reason, now more than ever one is to be cautious when being inside the “Hermit Kingdom’.

Fourth US Citizen Detained

On May 6th a fourth American citizen was detained in North Korea. The regime has described Kim Hak-song as someone “doing business in relation to the operation of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology”. In order words, the North Koreans detained Hak-song for suspicion of “hostile acts” against North Korea. The reason was given for most of their detains. No more details have been given at this time.

 

The second of two professors working at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology to be detained, he was helping out with agriculture work with the universities agricultural farm. North Korea’s state-run news agency stated that there is an investigation going forward looking into the crimes of Hak-song.

 

Born in China; Devoted to North Korea

Hak-song was born in Jilin, China but came to the United States and attended a university in California. He went to the United States in the mid 90’s and became a US citizen in the 2000’s. A hard working diligent man who also majored in agriculture at a university in China, he became dedicated to his degree. Described as someone who only wanted to help the Korean agriculture rather than cause harm to the country, he also started projects in efforts to improve the agricultural life in North Korea as well as sending in food since he constantly worried about food shortages in the country.

The US Informed on the situation

When someone is detained in North Korea, the United States work closely with the Swedish embassy in Pyongyang that also serves as the United States “protecting power” in order to do everything they can to bring the citizen back and to avoid hard labour. For now, due to privacy concerns, no other information is being provided.
