Soldier describes the moment he “shot dead Osama Bin Laden”

The former US Navy SEAL who killed al-Qaeda leader dead Osama bin Laden has described the exact moment, according to a Metro report.

Robert O’Neill, was part of the forces team that stormed a compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan on May 2 2011 and fired the shot that killed the most wanted man on earth.

In an extract from his new book The Operator, the former Seal soldier recalled that he assumed the terrorist leader was “a suicide bomber because he wasn’t surrendering.”

O’Neil says that even though Bin Laden had a shorter beard he recognise him.

“He had a woman in front of him, his hands on her shoulders. In less than a second, I aimed above the woman’s right shoulder and pulled the trigger twice. Bin Laden’s head split open and he dropped. I put another bullet in his head. Insurance.”

Despite his actions, O’Neill said he did not feel like a hero but was instead honoured to be part of the team that carried out the successful mission.
