Kremlin says Putin, Trump to speak by phone

Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will speak by phone on Tuesday, RIA news agency quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

Trump will speak with Putin on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. EDT (1630 GMT), the White House said on Monday night.

A senior Trump administration official said the two leaders would likely discuss the civil war in Syria, where Moscow backs the government of Bashar al-Assad and the United States supports rebels trying to overthrow him.

Levels of trust between Moscow and Washington have deteriorated since U.S. President Donald Trump took office, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview broadcast recently.

Asked about relations since Trump became president, Putin said, according to a transcript of the interview released by the Kremlin: “One could say that the level of trust on a working level, especially on the military level, has not improved, but rather has deteriorated.”
