Teenage girl died bungee jumping due to Spanish instructor’s “poor English”
A 17-year-old Dutch girl died bungee jumping from a bridge in Spain because of her instructor’s “poor English”, a court has ruled.
Vera Mol died in August 2015 when she went bungee jumping with a group of teenagers outside Cabezón de la Sal, in Spain’s northern region of Cantabria. The girl died when she jumped from a road bridge before her rope had been secured to anything. The instructor told her “no jump”, which she might have heard as “now jump”, as the Independent reports. “The use of the poor English ‘no jump’ could perfectly well be understood as an explicit order to jump by the victim,” the judgement read.
The instructor, accused of causing the teenager’s death, appeared before a court in Cantabria. The death could have been avoided if he said “don’t jump”, which is the correct terminology, according to the Daily Mail. Furthermore, the instructor should have checked the teenager’s ID to see if she was over the age of 18. Bungee Jumping was also banned from the road bridge under Spanish law.
The director of the FlowTrack bungee jumping company will face prosecution for homicide through negligence, as the Telegraph reports.
