Philippine Rise: Formerly known as Benham Rise
A new place to fish for Filipino fisherman.
Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte declared in an Executive Order Number 25 to rename the Benham Rise to Philippine Rise, last May 16, 2017. Philippine Rise is a seismically active undersea region and extinct volcanic ridge. Located in the Philippine Sea approximately 250 km (160 miles) east of the northern coastline of the province of Isabela.
The Philippine Sea lie a number of basins including the controversial West Philippine Seam inside of which is located the Central Basin Fault (CBF). Formerly Benham Rise, is located in the CBF and its basement probably is micro-continent; have been several scientific surveys made featured to study its nature and its impact on tectonic subduction, including one about the 1990 Luzon earthquake.
The Philippine Rise was discovered by an American geologist Andrew Benham in 1933. The Philippine government claimed this feature as part of its continental shelf in a claim lodged with the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf on April 8, 2009 and was approved by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) in 2012. It is declared as a protected food supply exclusive zone by the Philippine government. Mining and oil exploration are banned in the Philippine Rise as it is a protected area, since it is oil and mineral rich area.
In line of celebration of 119th years of independence on June 12, the Philippine Navy raised the Philippine Flag under water as a symbol of the country’s sovereign rights in that protected area.
