A Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another person was wounded in a car bomb explosion in the centre of Kiev on Tuesday, the interior ministry said, describing the incident as a “terrorist act.”

UPDATE: A Ukrainian serviceman killed by a car bomb in Kiev on Tuesday was a colonel for Ukraine’s military intelligence, the defence ministry said in a statement.

“As a result of (the explosion) a member of the defence ministry’s main intelligence department, Colonel Maksim Shapoval, was killed,” it said.

Police said an explosive device in the vehicle blew up at 0516 GMT while the car was moving, killing the driver.

According to reports, the service man was part a colonel with the military intelligence.

“Since he was an acting serviceman, the prosecutor’s office will determine the investigative procedure of this criminal act, which is currently registered as a ‘terrorist act,'” interior ministry spokesman Artem Shevchenko told journalists.

He did not give further details.

Online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda said the serviceman, Maxim Shapoval, was a high-ranking official involved in military intelligence.

The defence ministry was not immediately available for comment.

Since fighting with pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine broke out in 2014, the number of incidents involving explosives outside the conflict zone has increased, but car bombs are relatively rare.
