Tory and DUP deal imminent
Sources from within number 10 have advised that a DUP deal is imminent.
The controversial DUP deal that looks set to be formalised today is coming to fruition. Critics of the deal have already gathered outside number 10 as Arlene Foster (the DUP leader) prepares to sign the pact.
Critics of this alliance are concerned about the impact that this could have for the stability of Northern Ireland and any potential backlash. Labour MP Stephen Kinnock has advised that such a collaboration would threaten the achievements that have been made to quell violence in Northern Ireland – which may set the peace process back 40 years.
Part of the stipulations set out by Arlene Foster and her cohorts has been to gain 2 billion pounds worth of funding for Northern Ireland. Such stipulations will see money syphoned from Scotland’s economy, which will fuel the push for independence.
There are also concerns about the impact that this deal will have for policy changes and progressive policies. The manifesto claims of the DUP largely centres on regressive policy shifts that will clash with the fallout of neo liberal politics. Although Arlene Foster has claimed her party is not homophobic and do not have regressive policies in relation to abortion many are fearful of their influence at number 10. Moreover their connections with paramilitary loyalist organisations will potentially threaten peace in Northern Ireland and this could spread elsewhere in the UK.
