Yellowstone grizzlies to be removed from endangered species safeguards

Yellowstone grizzly bears will be striped of the protections offered by the Endangered Species Act.

Grizzly bears in and around Yellowstone National Park will be stripped of Endangered Species Act protections under a rule to be published this week by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced on Thursday.

Dropping the classification of Yellowstone’s grizzlies as a threatened species, formally proposed in March 2016 under the Obama administration, was based on the agency’s findings that the bears’ numbers have rebounded sufficiently in recent decades.
