London fire death toll rises to 79- VIDEO
In one of the worst fires in modern history for London, the death toll rises, as most of the missing have turned out to be another number added to the growing toll. 79 people are now presumed dead in the Grenfell Tower fire.
The Grenfell Tower fire death toll has risen, as the number reached 79 today as it was announced by Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy at a press conference at the New Scotland Yard. Most of the missing have been identified as victims.
The Grenfell Tower fire was one of the most deadly fires in modern London history, as it tore right through the 24 story building. Cundy was not short to announce his pain for the victims and what he currently is going through as a commander. He also stated it could take many weeks for the recovery operation to be completed. As of now, he stated that it is “proceeding as quickly as possible.”
So far only five of the people who have been named missing have been found, safe and well, but for other families it has been a dreadful experience. For instance, Jessica Urbano, 12, has been missing since the fire. Her families have pleaded with the public to keep an eye for her, but to not spread rumors that she has been found, as some reported that she had been found in a hospital. That was not the case. Her family still holds faith that she is alive.
“The awful reality is due to the intensity of the fire and the devastation within Grenfell Tower that we may not be able to identify everybody that died. We have been from the top to the bottom of Grenfell Tower. The search operation will be painstaking,” Cundy Stated. “Having been in there myself, it’s really hard to describe the devastation that the fire has caused.”
People are now demanding justice for the people who lived in Grenfell Tower, as cladding was apparently the main cause as to why the fire spread so quickly. Regardless the public is now pushing for a full investigation, including an investigation to see if crime had anything to do with it.
The police have made this an open investigation, as well as the government promising a public inquiry. Cundy has also stated that everything will be looked at in the highly complex investigation. From the construction of the building to refurbishment, fire safety measures, management and maintenance.
