Could Trump Administration lead to a rise in the number of reinforcements in Afghanistan?

The Unites States’ storied involvement in the fight against the Taliban and Islamic State could be on the verge of heightening, if reports coming from Fox News are anything to go by. Since ex-President Obama’s insistence to slow the process of sending troops out to fight (with the intention of outright withdrawal from the war), the current incumbent’s (namely Donald Trump’s) administration could yet approve the sending of up to 20,000 quoted into battle.

A former vice chief of staff at the U.S. Armed Forces, General Jack Keane spoke to Fox News about the reported 4,000 men and women set to be moved out by the Pentagon. In response to the figure, Keane said, “Will it change the momentum of the war to our favor? My judgement is it’s likely not to.”

Keane also had comments to make regarding former President Obama’s decision-making, suggesting that not enough was done to have successfully won and ended the war after 16 years. The army veteran stressed that the removal of troops weakened the resolve that had been built.

U.S. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has yet to make an official announcement regarding troop levels in Afghanistan, however admitted to the Senate Armed Services Committee that the U.S. and its allies “are not winning” the war.
