More danger to the environment
Following on from the UK General Election, Prime Minister Theresa May has now announced her new cabinet, including Michael Gove as Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, causing more concern from the public.
It’s been a tough year for the environment. First was the appointment of Scott Pruitt as head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, and then Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Agreement to tackle Climate Change. Now comes the latest blow.
Michael Gove was announced as the Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs when Theresa May reshuffled the Conservative Cabinet following last week’s UK General Election, and the question is, is he up for the job?
Looking back at Michael Gove’s track record when it comes to the environment begins to spark concerns. During his time as the Secretary of State for Education he rather controversially attempted to remove all talk of Climate Change from the schools Geography curriculum, a move that was soon overturned.
During his time as a Member of Parliament, he has also voted against a lot of green endeavours. He voted for the Badger Cull and against targets for UK air pollution emissions.
Michael Gove has also previously shown his support for fracking, a subject which has caused a large level of consternation among the general public, and an outcry at his most recent appointment.
Despite all of this Michael Gove did support environmental protection during a speech in 2014.
