The Tory and DUP coalition
Since the fallout of the 2017 snap general election we have heard claims that the DUP may form a coalition with the Tory party to ensure they hold the balance of power. However, talks are still being held to pin down the finer details of the discussion. Many concerns have been raised about the DUPs sectarian origin and connections with loyalist paramilitary organisations.
Not only does this leave many worried about the consequences for stability in Northern Ireland, but it looks like Scotland’s democracy may be subsumed by the DUP, who would hold the balance of power if a deal is struck. Moreover, it has been claimed that Theressa May has misled the Queen during discussions about the coalition.
The DUP have also been known for their extreme views on abortion, gay rights and creationism. Some have suggested their extreme views may seep into policy, leaving Westminster open to regressive policies. As part of this deal it would be assumed that the DUP would have power over policy shifts.
The Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson is attempting to distance herself from the English Tory branch amid concerns about homophobia. Ruth Davidson is frank and open about her relationship with a Catholic woman who she plans to marry. However, prior to the election Ruth Davidson had smeared Jeremy Corbyn with claims he had fratinised with members of the IRA. However, the DUPs connections with terrorist groups are well document.
Today Fallon has defended the coalition – stating that it would only serve to support national security policies and the like. Potentially strengthening the alliance with the USA and their policies in the Middle East. It is well known that the DUP would support a similar foreign policy to Donald Trump. As discussions are still underway the country is uncertain about the outcome and many are confused about the potential threat to peace it could have.
