Opinion: Theresa May loser in unlosable election

Theresa May has called for a period of stability, ironically that is what she threw away by calling this snap election which was destined to fail.

Theresa May called this election on her desire to increase her own power, she wanted to strengthen her position for Brexit negotiations.

Now she needs to go begging just to remain involved in those same negotiations.

First, she needs to find 326 seats to form a government, that appears a formality with the DUP’s 10 Northern Ireland seats to add to the Conservative’s 318 likely seats.

But the need to work with the DUP just to form a government is an immense climb down for Theresa May. She expected a big mandate, she has none.

Next Theresa May needs to survive in her own role. Just twelve months ago she was she was elected unopposed as leader of the Conservative party and as prime minister. She already has her own team asking her to consider her position, and calling for her head.

Worse news for her her party is that those who might have led have been harmed, Amber Rudd and Steven Crabb have both had their own electorate margins reduced to about 300 votes. Theresa May also discredited others who may have led after her failure, Boris Johnson labelled ‘two nearly-new water-canons’ after she mocked him for his failed purchase of crowd control equipment from Germany to discredit him.

In her election campaign, she pointed out that if she loses just six seats then Jeremy Corbyn will be negotiating Brexit.

It’s unlikely she can remain. With just 11 days to Brexit negotiations, Britain has no idea who will be at that table.
