Immigration activists arrested in Texas state Capitol
With chants of “undocumented, unafraid,” 15 activists were arrested in Austin as they protested in streets to challenge the state of Texas’ position on DACA.
15 were arrested in Austin, Texas on Wednesday while challenging Texas Attorney General Ken Paxon’s threat to sue the Trump Administration over the Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals program (DACA,) an Obama-era program that protects the children of undocumented immigrants.
Approximately 50 activists marched to the capitol building to chants of “¡Si se puede!” (Yes we can!) “el pueblo esta presente! (the people are here!”) and “unafraid and outraged.” Some of whom intentionally blocked major intersections leading to the capitol building and were thusly arrested.
The arrested, four of whom were DACA recipients, were charged with obstructing a highway or other passageway, a class B misdemeanor. They were taken to the Travis County Jail and released as of Thursday morning, according to the protest organizers.

DACA is a program implemented by former President Obama in 2012 to provide temporary amnesty for the children of undocumented immigrants. As of this writing, 780,000 individuals have been approved for the program.
President Trump has vowed to end the program.
“We know there’s a lot of fear and anxiety in our communities. However, we know that we cannot put our faith and hopes in politicians,” said Reyna Montoya, one of the organizers of the protest. “We have seen that victories have [only] been won when communities have put everything at risk.”
