The sex offending mini-cab driver

Cabs… Drivers… We trust them. We get in a car with a complete stranger and allow them to know the information of where we are and where our destination is. At all hours and in our weakest state we get in a confined space with this stranger.

Jahir Hussain, 37 years old (24\03\1980) is a mini-cab driver. He is also now a convicted sex offender and rapist.

The conviction and sentencing follows an investigation by the sexual offences and child abuse command. Sources say he admitted charges of rape, sexual assault and battery on all three. Hussain was originally sentenced to 15 and a half years but it was reduced to 12 (minimum of 8) for guilty plea.

Police found forensic evidence as well as the victim who places his first victim on the 21st October 2016. He picked the 23 year old up at Old Street area as she was making her way home. She fell asleep in the back of the cab and when she awoke she found Hussain in the back of the car with her. He had cut her clothes and then in her weakened state attacked her repeatedly before taking her home.

His second victim 31 year old female came forward with a similar attack. He picked her up at Old Street area around 2:00 in the morning. She had ordered a cab when Jahir Hussain turned up when she asked “if he was the cab he ordered?” He lied and told her he was indeed the cab she had ordered. His victim (like the first victim) fell asleep in the back of the cab. She woke up to find him sitting in the back with her. She reacted quickly and stopped him from further attack when he drove her to an abandoned industrial estate. She fought and managed to escape the car. Hussain instantly abandoned her and fled the scene of the crime.

The third victim 29 year old female was reported to have another similar story. She was picked up at Old Street area at 4:00 in the morning by Hussain. Acting as a mini cab driver Hussain picked up the victim despite her no having booked one. Again the victim awoke to find him in the back with her. He had cut her clothes and was attacking her before driving her home.

Metropolitan police say that both victims identified his number plate.

Police arrested him on the 3rd of December 2016 and was charged early hours the next day. Forensic evidence then connected him to both the 2 attacks in December and the one attack in October. He was then charged further.

He was convicted of 2 counts of rape, 1 count of sexual assault, 1 count of assault by penetration in relation to 1st victim, 1 count of sexual assault, 1 count of false representation in relation to his 2nd victim and sexual assault and battery with intent to commit a sexual offence. Hussain will be registered as a sexual offender indefinitely and indefinite sexual offences prevention order which means he will not be allowed to be a taxi, mini cab or other type of driver as well as being alone with a female in a vehicle unless they are family or are aware of his conviction.

“Hussain is a predator who exploited his employment as a mini-cab driver to seriously sexually assault vulnerable females. Women should be able to go out and enjoy themselves without fear of assault,” DC Samantha Dart, the officer in the case.

“We are grateful to all three women for having the courage to report these matters to police, and for their continued support throughout the investigations”.

“The strength of evidence against Hussain was overwhelming which led to him entering guilty pleas and the sentence handed to him reflects the gravity of his offending.”

Acting Detective Inspector Steve Birchall, the supervising officer in the case, said that “Hussain is a predatory sex offender who has taken advantage of his position by targeting vulnerable women he has picked up while acting as a mini-cab driver. Travelling home by mini-cab should be a safe method of transportation and Hussain is in no way reflective of the numerous taxi drivers who offer this service every night in London. He has been identified and now convicted through the presence of mind and strength of the three women in this case who have had the courage to report what happened to them to the police.”
