North Korea fires missile. Japan PM Abe: “The threat to our nation in severe and real”
North Korea fired a projectile that appeared to be a missile shortly before midnight Japan time (1500 GMT) on Friday, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said, citing government officials.
UPDATE: Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Saturday that the international community must raise the heat on North Korea over its latest ballistic missile launch.
The launch late Friday night, following a recent intercontinental ballistic missile launch, showed that “the threat to Japan’s security has become grave and real,” Abe told reporters after meetings with cabinet members.
“As long as North Korea continues such provocative actions, there is no avoiding maintaining close contact with the international community – starting with the United States, South Korea, China and Russia – and further strengthening the pressure.”
UPDATE: Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Saturday that Japan was staying in close contact with allies the United States and South Korea on the North Korean military-related moves after Pyongyang launched a missile just prior to midnight.
UPDATE: The missile may have flown higher than 3,000 km, a Japanese defence official was quoted by NHK public television as saying.
UPDATE: Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Saturday that a North Korean missile flew for about 45 minutes and appeared to have landed in the waters of Japan’s exclusive economic zone, but that there were no immediate reports of damage.
Suga added that the missile launch was unacceptable and in clear violation of United Nations resolutions, and said Japan had protested in the strongest possible terms
UPDATE: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Saturday that North Korea had fired a missile that may have landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
He added that a meeting of the National Security Council would be convened and that Japan would take every necessary step to ensure the safety of its citizens
The apparent missile may have landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone, NHK said.
The Pentagon confirmed that it has detected what seems to be a missile, being launched form North Korea.
Prime-minister Abe holds an emergency meeting with officials.
