Trumps bans Transgender individuals from serving in the US Military

In a series of tweets, Donald Trump has announced that transgender individuals will not be allowed to “serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military”.

Transgender individuals will no longer be allowed to serve in the U.S. military in any capacity, according to a statement made on Twitter today by President Trump, in which he claimed that this was to relieve the burden of “tremendous medical costs and disruption”.

Nowhere is it clear what exactly is meant by “medical costs and disruption”. The U.S. Military has been paying for the cost of sex change operations to treat gender dysphoria since at least last October, but only where “medically necessary”. One could argue that paying for medically necessary treatments is less a “burden” and more a duty of care. Trump’s use of Twitter to make policy announcements continues to leave the public with not enough specifics to understand any decision.

Several important details are left unclear; including what “disruption” transgender personnel are causing, what will happen to currently serving transgender personnel, and whether Trump is even aware that there are currently serving transgender personnel. (The wording of the announcement, e.g. “would entail”, implies that there aren’t yet any transgender personnel, which is not true.)

Employers discriminating based on gender is an ongoing problem that is slowly being minimized. This decision by the U.S. President could undo years, even decades, of social advancement.
