Transgenders banned from serving in the U.S. Military, Trump announces
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that the Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in the Military.
“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow. Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you,” Trump said in a series of tweets.

The United States’ military policy previously allowed for exclusion of transgender people from service on medical grounds. While gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members were allowed to serve openly since 2011, transgender service members risked discharge if they did not pass as their assigned sex. This required that service members conceal their gender identities throughout service.
It is estimated as of 2014 that there are approximately 15,500 transgender individuals either serving on active duty or in the National Guard or Army Reserve forces within the U.S. Military.
