Two Israeli policemen shot dead near Jerusalem holy site, gunmen killed – UPDATE

Three attackers opened fire near Jerusalem’s holiest site on Friday, wounding three Israelis, two of them critically, before they were killed, Israeli police said.

UPDATE: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Friday and condemned a deadly shooting attack near Jerusalem’s holiest site, Palestinian news agency Wafa said.

“The President expressed his strong rejection and condemnation of the incident that took place at al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as his rejection of any violent incidents from any side, especially in places of worship,” Wafa said.

Abbas called on Netanyahu to end the shutdown of the holy site, where three Arab-Israeli gunmen shot dead two Israeli policemen and wounded a third. Netanyahu assured Abbas the long-standing status quo at the compound, which gives Muslims exclusive prayer rights, would be maintained, Wafa said

Israeli authorities shut the area after the attacks – the most serious incident in years close to the highly sensitive compound, which is holy to both Muslims and Jews.

UPDATE: Israeli police declared Friday’s Muslim prayers will not be held at Jerusalem’s holiest site after two Israelis were critically wounded in a shooting near the site.

The ancient, marble-and-stone compound houses the al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third-holiest site, and the 7th century Dome of the Rock. Thousands pray there every Friday.


Police were still checking whether the gunmen, who were reportedly killed by security forces, were Palestinian, a spokesman said

Army Radio said the shooting took place near the sacred site known to Muslims as Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as Temple Mount.

Police said the three attackers were killed by security forces. The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said two of the Israelis wounded were receiving life-saving treatment.
