The United Nations has identified an additional 38 probable mass graves in Democratic Republic of Congo’s central Kasai region. This will be bringing the total to at least 80 since the outbreak of an insurrection last August.
A spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Congo speaking with reporters said that the graves were identified during a joint mission with Congolese military investigators.
The government has blamed the militia for these mass graves discovered in neighbouring Kasai-Central province and army prosecutor General Joseph Ponde said that Kamuina Nsapu fighters were suspected of dumping bodies in the graves.
Local Catholic Church says more than 3,000 people have been killed in fighting between government forces and Kamuina Nsapu.
According to the U.N., more than a million people have been displaced, making Congo the African country with the most internally displaced people with a figure reaching 3.8 million.
Speaking to the U.N. Security Council, peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said violence in the Kasai provinces “has reached very disturbing levels.”
With the country’s election originally due in November 2016, Congo’s government points to the violence as the reason for further election delays with some provinces yet to register.
