Today, July 11th, New York City honors an NYPD officer who was fatally shot on July 5th while sitting in her police command vehicle in the Bronx. Thousands have come out to pay their respects and remember the twelve year police veteran. Familia leaves behind her three children, a 20 year old and 12 year old twins.

At the funeral, Mayor de Blasio had a lot of amazing things to say about Familia and her years of service. He said, “She was killed solely because she wore a uniform.” He later added, “She was murdered while acting as an agent of peace.” Perhaps the most touching sentiment from Mayor de Blasio was this, “We’re here to lay a hero to rest, but we have to remember the many ways she was a hero. In her service to this city, and her love for her family and all she did for everyone she came across in life.”

The service for Familia was held at World Changers Church in the Bronx. Miosotis Familia was a resident of the Bronx, and a protector of it as well. As the service got underway, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill struggled to get through the eulogy. At one point, he addressed Familia’s children and said, “Nothing I can say will bring your mom back. I’m sorry for that. But I can make you this promise. Your mom didn’t die in vain. Your mom’s legacy will never fade from the importance of memory.

The waves of support the 46th Precinct are receiving is crucial to help them move on from this horrendous event. Inspector Philip Rivera, the Precinct commander said that the massive amount of support is what is helping the precinct have courage with moving forward in the wake of Familia’s untimely passing.
