Self-described “anarchist” urinated on the American flag during Independence Day
Emily Lance says she was trying to make a dramatic statement
As Americans celebrated yet another Independence Day on the 4th of July, a women made the decision to post a video onto Facebook of herself, controversially peeing on the American flag. The flag, which was submerged inside a toilet, came with a provocative caption, “F*** your country. F*** your stupid f***ing flag.” Unsurprisingly, the video picked up a hefty amount of negative engagement before it was later removed by Facebook, who sent Emily Lance a friendly notification normally targeted toward suicide users.
Lance was violently threatened by angered Facebook account holders which escalated to the level of having a $3000 bounty to have her killed submitted to Craigslist. Other offended users had managed to locate her family (Lance reported with a later post that her father had been threatened at his place of work). She also admitted her family did not share her views over the flag, suggesting that they love the country.
Lance ridiculed the protests, stating her bafflement at a person’s desire to murder someone over a flag. She described such people as “brainwashed” and an epitomized “all that is foul.” She went on, “What you people don’t understand? You’re celebrating freedom while damning me for doing the same. You can’t have it both ways.” Citing idolatry as a reason for the negative reactions (referencing rape and death threats received by journalists who had questioned American ‘hero’ Chris Kyle, the inspiration of Oscar-winning film American Sniper). Lance suggested that because of these kinds of violent reactions, she advocates anarchism.
Justin King, journalist and former military contractor had this to say: “Emily Lance displayed more of what it means to be an American by urinating on the flag than most do you waving it. To those who are threatening her, I’d remind you that you cannot support the flag and undermine the freedoms it is supposed to represent. Many are saying; if you don’t like the flag, get out. I say; if you don’t like the First Amendment, get out. You have a choice. Do you support a piece of cloth, or do you support the ideas it is meant to symbolize.”
Lance had informed ‘ANTIMEDIA’ that she wanted the video to “display hypocrisy and the dangers of statism”.
