G20: Trump steps back

Saturday saw the second day of the G20 summit, and further odd behaviour from US President Donald Trump as he appeared to step back from the World Stage

The G20 Summit in Hamburg this week is supposed to be a chance for the leaders of the World to shine and share their ideas to draw the global community closer together, but for one member state that doesn’t seem to be the case, according to two strange reports.

The first report to come out from the G20 world leaders meeting was that Donald Trump chose not to attend a portion of it, instead electing to send his daughter Ivanka Trump in his place. This decision presented the US President with a massive backlash of public opinion, something that the Trumps are not unfamiliar with lately.

Twitter, President Trump’s key communication source, was awash with outrage:

Of course, some have also commented that Ivanka Trump, who holds a bachelors degree in economics does at least hold some qualifications to negotiate with foreign powers, but the fact remains that she was not elected into her role, and just a short time ago claimed that she “Tries to avoid politics.”

The substitution of his daughter aside there were other calls for concern. America, once considered to be a leading force in global politics, wasn’t represented at all for what, according to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, was one of the G20’s core discussions around Climate Change.

While the other nineteen countries signed a joint statement regarding Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, Donald Trump and America were conspicuously absent, leading a lot of people refer to the meeting now as the G19, rather than the G20.

This all follows comments that it is now Angela Merkel, not Donald Trump, who holds the title of “Leader of the Free World”, an unofficial position held by the President of the United States since the second world war. Donald Trump has often vilified the media for it’s representation of him, but there are times when the President seems to be incapable of helping himself.
