Key points from the G20 summit in Hamburg.

The twelfth G20 Summit in Germany’s Hamburg is being attended by more than twenty Heads of State or Government as well as representatives of international organisations at the Messehallen Convention Centre. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is hosting this years’s G20 Summit around the theme ‘Shaping an Inter-connected World’.

The annual G-20 summit brings together the world’s major economic powers who “traditionally focus on issues relating to global economic growth, international trade and financial market regulation,” according to the summit’s website. The motto of the two-day event was “Shaping an interconnected world”.

While terrorism and security were on the priority list of the world leaders on the first day of the summit, key issues like trade policy, climate change, migration, sustainable development and global stability were also being discussed. German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed regret over The United States decision to withdraw from the Paris Accord. In the field of trade policy major industrialised states and emerging economies agreed to fight protectionism and unfair trade restrictions. The second day of the Summit focussed on ‘partnership with Africa, discussing plans for poverty eradication. G20 participants discussed at length the role of the World Health Organization (WHO).

This years’ G20 summit was marred by widespread violence which resulted in clashed between police and protestors. The police clashed with anti-capitalist demonstrators near the summit venue, firing water cannons and tear gas at hundreds of masked protesters after they threw bottles.

The ‘Group of Twenty’ is made up of 19 countries and the European Union. The countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US.
