To tie or not to tie? House of Commons say either is okay

The controversy over whether male MPs in the UK should wear a tie seems to be resolved.

Ever since Liberal Democrat MP Tom Brake (pictured) appeared in the UK’s House of Commons without a tie and with one button of his shirt undone the traditionalists have been complaining as wearing ties is the usual convention in the House.

On Thursday Brake raised the point with the Speaker of the House, Mr Bercow. It seems they were both agreed that whether an MP should speak shouldn’t be based on their fashion sense.

It seems that MPs still have to be dressed in a professional attire though. There have however been complaints before of certain MPs not wearing jackets. There was also one occasion when a novelty tie was worn in 2011. There were also complaints when Harriet Harman wore a feminist T-shirt, which not only might be considered correct attire for a woman in such a place but may what was on the T-shirt may have been considered a political message.

The Speaker meanwhile has gone without his traditional long wig, breeches and tights for a number of years now so it seems as if he is leading this vanguard.
