As the G20 Summit gets underway, protesters are hitting the streets in Hamburg

With the Worlds key leaders meeting in Hamburg this weekend for the start of the G20 Summit, the city itself has been filled with protesters.

Although the majority of the protests have been peaceful, there have been reports of violent outbreaks as well at points throughout the city, with police reports claiming that 159 police officers have been injured since Thursday and requesting reinforcements from outside the city.

Several of the peaceful protests have been set out to barricade roads through Hamburg to impede the travel of the world leaders through the city, and have succeeded in forcing spouses of the world leaders to remain inside their hotel, unable to attend an intended Climate Change conference on Friday.

Unfortunately, the protests have not remained peaceful. Reports of burning cars and police officers being attacked in the streets have been released, and a police helicopter over the city as reportedly attacked by a flare, narrowly missing the vehicle in what could have caused a dramatic accident in the populated area.

It has been reported that since the increased violence on Thursday night, Friday’s protests have been smaller and more dispersed, throughout the city, however, police in riot gear are still patrolling the city. It is yet to be seen if Friday night will see the return of the violence committed on Thursday.
