Angela Merkel trumps Trump as the leader of next G20 meeting

The G20 countries are looking at Angela Merkel as the new political leader of the world, and in most states, the German Chancellor enjoys a high confidence, as opposed to the current U.S. president which seems to be losing ground to Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s president Xi.

When it comes to world politics, states are starting to look at Germany and not the United States, to lead the way. As preparations for the G20 meeting are underway, the Pew Research Center wondered about which leaders enjoy the most confidence in member states and who is actually perceived as being the leader of the meeting.

According to their findings, member G20 states, put their confidence in the German Chancellor and even China’s president Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin fare much better than the current occupant of the Oval Office.

When measuring confidence in the European leader and the American president, the survey showed that the biggest differences in confidence were recorded in Germany, France and South Korea. 81% of Germans are confident in their chancellor and only 11% favor Trump. In France, Merkel is at 79% while Trump only received the confidence of 14% of the French citizens.

Few within G20 countries support U.S. withdrawal from trade agreements

Trump scored the lowest in Mexico, at only 5% while Angela Merkel’s lowest confidence score was recorded in Turkey, at 14%.

A globally unpopular leader

When looking at confidence in the four most powerful world leaders, Merkel has a 42% confidence and next in line is president Xi Jinping with 28%. Putin came in third with 27% and last was Donald Trump with only 22%.

And Trump enjoys low confidence in almost all states around the globe. Only in Russia, Philippines, Vietnam, Israel, Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania, the current US president has a confidence which is higher than 50% and states in Latin America and the European Union seem to be the least friendly towards Trump.

And the Pew Attitude survey also showed another characteristic. Not only is Trump unpopular around the world, but as time goes by, confidence in him is actually getting lower even in countries where there are supporters of his policies.

Trump also has problems at home since the survey also highlighted, that days before the G20 summit, over 60% of Americans are more confident in Angela Merkel than in their own president.

Low confidence in Trump worldwide

According to reports, Americans are worried about the Turmp-Putin meeting, considering that their president is less prepared in dealing with foreign affairs and has less experience on the world stage.
