Main French union disappointed with Macron reforms, but not joining protest
France’s biggest trade union the CFDT on Thursday said it was disappointed with the detail of President Emmanuel Macron’s key labour reforms but would not be calling its members to join planned street protests on Sept 12.
“The CFDT disappointed”, the union’s leader Laurent Berger told reporters after a meeting with the government, but he added: “Taking to the streets is not the only mode of action for unions.”
He said he was satisfied on some points of the reforms, but was unhappy with the level at which dismissal awards in France’s labour courts will be capped, and unhappy with a section of the reforms in which bosses will be allowed to negotiate directly with staff in companies with fewer than 20 workers.
