Hungarian PM Orban to ask EU to help foot bill for border protection

Hungary will ask the European Commission to finance half of the cost of protecting its southern borders from migrants which has been paid by Hungarian taxpayers so far, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff, Janos Lazar, said on Thursday.

Lazar said Orban will write to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday, asking for the EU to contribute about 400 million euros.

He said Hungary, with its fence and police and troops on the borders with Serbia and Croatia, “was protecting all the citizens of Europe from the flood of illegal migrants.”
