Trump arrived in Texas Tuesday morning to survey first hand the damages caused by Hurricane Harvey. After a brief stay in Corpus Christi, the president will travel to Austin where he is to confer with Governor Greg Abbott and other top officials. The meetings are to survey the damages and speed up the aid given to the victims.

Five days after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, President Trump visited the ravaged-state to survey damages. The hurricane, listed as a category 4, has displaced thousands and killed at least 10 people. After originally planning to tour San Antonio, Trump opted to visit Corpus Christi, since it lays near the most damaged area. Emergency management official are scheduled to meet Trump and update him on their rescue efforts. Trump will oversee the level of coordination between local, federal and state officials to see if the recovery efforts are handled properly.

Later this evening, Trump will travel to Austin in order to meet Gov. Greg Abbott and other top officials.

For the past few days, Trump has praised the efficient response of local and state officials to the emergency. The commander in chief actually planned an earlier visit, but the weather conditions were too adverse.

Aside from supervising the relief efforts, this visit intends on providing emotional support to the victims. During an interview in Texan radio this morning, VP Mike Pence stated: “the president wanted to get there, not only to show solidarity with the families that are suffering in this storm, but to make sure that all the federal agencies engaged are doing everything that can be done to rescue people and lay a foundation for full recovery..”

The president has not yet specified if he will fly over Houston, but the continuous heavy rain made this prospect unlikely. The city has been flooded by more than 30 inches of rain, and the rain is still ongoing on Tuesday. White house Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said: “The president want to be very cautious about making sure that any activity doesn’t disrupt any of the recovery efforts that are still ongoing…”

After his scheduled meetings, Trump will return to Texas on Saturday to survey other damaged zones.
