Teenage arranged-marriage bride kills herself after undergoing humiliating “virginity test”

A young bride killed herself after her husband rejected the results of the virginity tests she was forced to take, according to the Independent.

Rajabbi Khurshed, 18, killed herself by drinking a lethal dose of vinegar after 40 days of her arranged marriage with Zahar Pirov, 24, in the Charbogh village, Tajikistan. The man asked his young wife to take two further virginity tests besides the government-required exam in Tajikistan. He refused to believe the results and asked for a second wife.

The teenage girl’s family told Radio Free Europe that their daughter told them on her deathbed that she felt a massive pressure from Pirov’s part to accept a second wife and “couldn’t take it any longer”. Her mother, Fazila Mirzoeva, said Khurshed was a victim of “slander and violence”, as her daughter had never had a boyfriend or an intimate relationship with anyone.

Pirov has been charged with driving his new wife to suicide. He might face eight years in prison. He defended himself by saying: “My wife gave me a written statement that she allows me to get a second wife because she wasn’t a virgin when we got married.”

Since 2015, Tajikistan made it compulsory for both men and women to undergo medical check-ups before a wedding. For women, this often includes a purity test.
