Soldiers hit and injured by vehicle, in Paris. One suspect arrested – UPDATE

French soldiers were hit and injured by a vehicle in the western Parissuburb of Levallois-Perret, Paris police authorities said on Wednesday.

UPDATE 3: Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirmed that police had arrested the suspect behind an attack on French soldiers in a Paris suburb on Wednesday.

“A suspect who was driving the car involved in the attack has been arrested on the highway between Paris and Boulogne-sur-Mer,” Philippe told lawmakers during parliament question time.

UPDATE 2: The man suspected of ramming a car into a group of soldiers on Wednesday in a Paris suburb has been shot and arrested on a motorway in northern France, a judicial source said.

A Reuters witness at the scene saw a BMW car, the model used in the attack, with several bullet holes in it. Ambulances surrounded the vehicle.

One policeman was wounded by a stray bullet in the operation, which took place on the A16 motorway near Marquise, close to the ports of Boulogne-Sur-Mer and Calais.

The suspect was not armed, the source said.

UPDATE 1: French counter-terrorist investigators have been asked to probe an incident in which a car rammed into a group of soldiers in a Paris suburb on Wednesday, a source in the judiciary said.

A judicial source told Reuters that the department had taken up the matter and was working alongside colleagues from the DGSI internal intelligence agency – a move that in France shows the matter is being treated as a probable act of terrorism.

A statement from French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly added that police forces were looking for a suspect on the run after the incident, in which police said six soldiers were injured, two of them seriously.

“Police intervention is underway. Search underway for vehicle,” the Paris police department said in a Tweet.

Six soldiers were hurt, four of them lightly and two more seriously, a police department official added in response to a query from Reuters.

Local French mayor: Levallois car hitting soldiers was deliberate act

Patrick Balkany, the local mayor for the western Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, had “no doubt” that Wednesday’s incident in which a car drove into a group of soldiers, was a deliberate act.

“Without any doubt, it was a deliberate act,” Balkany told BFM TV.

“It’s an odious act of aggression,” Balkany also said, adding that the car in question was a BMW.
