Each generation has a different favorite city but the Big Apple is always on top
New York City is the most popular city in the world and the Big Apple seems to be a cross-generational favorite.
The 2017 Top Cities Index released by Ipsos shows that New York City is once again the world’s favorite urban dwelling. But unlike last year, when London and Paris where in close second, in 2017, Abu Dhabi took home the silver medal while Tokyo, Sydney and Zurich on the same score in equal fifth.
“Again we see the power of the New York brand with its appeal to people across the world, young and old. In the wake of Brexit, London will be pleased to remain Europe’s pre-eminent city, ahead of its arch-rival Paris. But the rise of Abu Dhabi and the weakness of Sydney among younger people remind us that no city can afford to rest on its laurels,” said Simon Atkinson, Chief Knowledge Officer at Ipsos.
Interviews were conducted using the Ipsos Online Panel system, among 18,557 online adults aged 16-64 in 26 countries. People were asked which, from a list of 60 global cities, they felt were best to live in, do business in, and visit.
Since the last survey, Ipsos added new cities to its global list. Belgrade, Bogota, Delhi, Dublin, Lagos, Lima, Manila, Munich, Nairobi, Prague, Vancouver and Vienna, featured on the 2017 list of 60 cities. Nairobi and Tehran, both came in last in this year’s survey.
The only one city that has broken into the top ten since 2013 is Amsterdam.
Best for business
Their answers were not surprising. New York City is the best place for business with 23% of the global sample selecting it from the list. Abu Dhabi is second with 21%, followed by London and Hong Kong (both on 16%) and Tokyo (15%).
Best for tourism
When it comes to visiting, the global population seems to have its eyes set on France’s capital. 21% say that Paris is one of the best destinations for tourism, followed closely by Rome, while New York came in third.
Best to live in
When it comes to moving, participants said that Zurich was the best place to live in, followed by Sydney, in a very close second and Abu Dhabi, which came in third but climbed to the top form the seventh place.
Generational favorites
While different generations might feel differently about cityscapes, most of them have one thing in common, they all favor New York. The Big Apple came in first among Millennials, Generation X and Generation Z. The only ones breaking New York’s winning streak are Baby Boomers. For those born between 1945 and 1965, the best city is Switzerland’s Zurich.
