Knife crime reaches highest level in seven years
A new study has found that knife crime has risen by 20% in the UK
A recent study carried out for the Local Government Association has found that nearly one in four shops is selling knives to underage teenagers.
In tests carried out across England and Wales, it was found that implements such as machetes, serrated knives, razor blades and craft knives were being sold to children as young as 12, with some major supermarkets chains being amongst the biggest offenders.
Responding to the findings of the study, the head of parliaments youth violence commission, Labour MP Vicky Foxcroft, said that 2017 could see a new low for knife deaths within the UK before calling for an “urgent, united and societal response” to the problem. She also welcomed the newly-proposed anti-knife crime measures which include banning the delivery of knives to private addresses and allowing police to confiscate banned banned weapons found in people’s homes.
The news comes just weeks after it was announced that knife offences have risen by 20% across the UK, the highest number in seven years.
The Local Government Association believes tougher sentences should be handed to shop owners who break break the law banning the sale of knives to people under 18.
