30 million Americans want their next car to be electric

More than 30 million Americans are likely to choose an electric car as their next vehicle, according to a study made by the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The number indicated by the survey, 30 million people or more, is equivalent to one out of seven car buyers in America, or 15 percent of the U.S. car-buying population.

“With their lower ownership costs and compatibility with emerging autonomous technologies, electric vehicles are poised to be a key vehicle of the future,” said Greg Brannon, AAA’s director of Automotive Engineering.

Millennials will make the bulk of buyers, the study shows.

According to AAA, one out of five members of Generation Y are interested in an electric vehicle as their next car.

“Tesla, a standout in AAA’s evaluations, has helped widen the appeal of electric vehicles by showing they can be stylish, performance-focused and filled with cutting-edge technology,” Brannon said.

The survey also showed that 70 percent of car buyers in the US consider fuel economy to be the most important thing to weigh when selecting a new car. After that comes safety, the car’s brand, the design, and smartphone connectivity.
