Only a quarter of Americans prefer the TV over the laptop when it comes to watching shows

Only 25 percent of Americans prefer watching shows on a TV screen, laptops and smartphones being the new way to enjoy shows, according to a report from Accenture, a business strategy and technology consulting firm.

The survey, done in 26 countries, reflects a dramatic drop form the previous year, when 59 percent of Americans preferred the TV screen.

In India, just 10 percent of those surveyed preferred TV.

Accenture Strategy managing director, Mike Chapman, said the results were ”a very, very big surprise,”.

He said said there were several reasons for the shift, starting with the rise in the last two years of shows available for streaming through services like Netflix.

Also, laptops are now designed as multimedia devices with better-resolution screens, and also smartphones, which offer flexibility for watching shows on the go.

“We all see people now, whether they’re on trains or walking down the street or standing in line, watching video clips,” Chapman said.

”TV manufacturers have to figure out how to add value to the experiences beyond resolution,” Chapman said.

Paul Gagnon, director of TV research at IHS Markit, says that while TV manufacturers continue to push for higher-resolution monitors, TV sales remain flat, as consumers tend not to replace second and third TV sets in the household, but invest in tablets and laptops.

Convergence President Brahm Eiley also said the prevalence of online video is helping to accelerate a revolution in viewing habits, especially among younger generations who have grown up with the Internet.

”For a lot of people in America under 40 or 45 — they operate so differently than the older generations,” Eiley said. ”They don’t consume TV in the same way their parents consumed.”
