Arkansas carries out first double execution in 17 years

American state of Arkansas carried out its first double execution in 17 years on Monday night, mirror.co.uk reports.

The two convicted killers that were executed made Arkansas become the first US state that put more than one inmate to death on the same day in almost two decades.

46-year-old Marcel Williams was convicted of kidnapping, raping and murdering 22-year-old Stacy Errickson back in 1997. He was also found guilty of abducting and raping two other women. He was pronounced dead around 10 pm local time.

Jack Jones, aged 52, was pronounced dead around 7 pm local time, after he was convicted of raping and killing 34-year-old Mary Phillips, as well as trying to murder her 11-year-old daughter, back in 1995. He was also convicted of rape and murder in Florida.

The two men were part of a group of eight people that the state had initially planned to execute this month over the course of 11 days, as the state’s supplies of midazolam (a sedative used in the execution protocol) are almost expired.

Four of those executions have been put on hold by court order, and it is yet unclear whether the state can proceed with further executions after multiple petitions were filed at the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has not issued a ruling on the matters yet.
