Beijing’s futuristic new subway stations are the stuff of movies
Beijing-based Qing-X Architectural Studio has finished the construction of a series of futuristic subway stations that look like they came out of a SF movie. Spiraling metal tunnels surround the elevated platforms while offering daylight and natural ventilation, as Inhabitat reports.
Architect Qi Ji Jun was inspired by the simple and functional form of a traditional scroll form. “The curved paper jerked at the two ends, seemed to be towed by the pen,” he said. This concept can be observed in the tubular rail wrapping the platforms and creating a sense of unity. Thedesign is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, as the two triangular corners that spiral out of the tunnel help widen the driver‘s field of vision.
Right now, the Fangshan line has 11 stations, with 9 aboveground tracks and 2 underground tracks. The stations consist of three stories and the metal and glass-clothed platforms are located aboveground. The overlapped roofs of the platform help pushing up and outwards the air during the hot summer months. The area surrounding the stations is filled with lush vegetation.
