These 3D-printed tires last virtually forever
Michelin wants to launch a 3D-printed tire that doesn’t need to be inflated and lasts through the entire lifetime of a vehicle. Furthermore, it includes high-tech sensors and it is 100% biodegradable, according to Environment Guru.
The airless tire was modeled on alveolar structures, similar to the air sacs found in human lungs. The tire’s interior is solid, while the exterior is more flexible, this way preventing the dreaded blowouts and flat tires. The tire is made of organic, recyclable, biodegradable materials, that make it recyclable.
The tire’s treads can be customized to meet the needs of a specific vehicle thanks to the 3D printing. Furthermore, Michelin reduced the amount of rubber used in the tire to enhance its sustainability, according to Inhabitat. Each tire’s wear level is tracked by embedded sensors that order reprints for smooth driving.
Michelin has not specified when will the tires be available for purchase.
